About Us

The DeKalb Rural Volunteer Fire Department Association was established in 1981.

The DeKalb Fire Protection District was established by voters in 1994. The Fire District covers 90-square miles in southwestern Buchanan County, including areas south of Lake Contrary.

The Fire District serves a population of roughly 1,333 residents and a commuting population of roughly 20,000 each day.

Its primary headquarters is located at 15480 SW State Route JJ Highway.  Fire personnel answer approximately 80 to 125 calls for service annually. Services rendered are fires, medical assist, auto rescue, carbon monoxide readings, and PR events.

The Fire District employs a volunteer labor force of 24 persons.

Fire personnel are dispatched by the St. Joseph Police Department. They use digital paging receivers for call notification, along with the Active 911 mobile app software on smart phones.

The Fire Station houses five fire apparatus. They are one pumper, two tankers, one brush truck, and one medical support vehicle. Photos of our apparatus can be clicking the Apparatus page.
